Copralites
The UK is unusual in that it [had] about 7 foot of copralite deposits under much of the land . Most was been mined out now during the first world war , appartently the biggest deposit left is under Cambridge.
As shit goes , its a wonderful resource , full of phosphates . We can thank the dinosaurs for something at least !
However, The amount of dinosaurs producing that prodigious amount of droppings beggars belief ! The reason it didnt degrade, one assumes is that it was all dropped under water, so all this wildlife was aquatic, something that wasnt expounded upon when i was a kid [ and that's when we get interested in these things ! ] Did this foul sufficient of the water to stop bacteria doing its own business , rather than fossilising the stuff ? I suspect the beaches wouldnt have got a cleas bill of health for bathers in those days .....
