why do men bald ?
Well , it's a big subject and multi million pound industry .
I'm a big fan of Elaine Morgan whos' 1972 book 'the descent of Woman' raised serious thoughts in my head. The book is an absolute must read if you are interested in human evolution . It postulates that Man at some point went back into a water existence, and covers the evidence supporting this [ Lots and lots] . I think it was written before 'Lucy' was discovered in an African lake , but that was just further evidence in my opinion . It was never taken seriously in the scientific community , I believe due to its controversial title [ 1970's was the Feminist era after all].
Anyhow, evolution is basically a species trying to maximise its population , so any extra energy requirement which serves no purpose will tend to die out over the generations .
I can't recall if she covered this in the book , but long hair in an aquatic environment would give children something to hang onto, and so could enable more children to attain adulthood.
Older males, though had much less need for this [ as we bald much more than females]. As males also lived in a polygamous society, one can imagine the females looking after the children , with the male acting to protect the tribe and ignoring the kids.
