Iran Goes NON NUCLEAR - huh ?
This isnt a scientific bit , but thought I'd mention it nevertheless.
America et al states that Iran has no intentions of becoming a nuclear power - it stopped ages ago , but has centrifuges [ read the news report on it - it does state this quite clearly ]
To make a nuclear device using uranium , the metal has to be 'enriched' . Enrichment involves concentrating the isotope of uranium that can go 'bang' [U235?] from the stable bit [U238?] , the difference in the numbers being approximately the difference in atomic weights .
Clear so far ?
This is done by making uranium hexafluoride , which is a gaseous compound. This is put into a centrifuge where a slight separation happens [ it's only slight because the density of each compound is nearly the same . After that it goes into another , and another [ hence the term used of a centrifuge train- they are all linked together to ease production]. After several thousand centrifuges have been used, enough has been separated to create 'enriched uranium'
I believe I read somewhere that it takes 50,000 centrifuges one year to create enough stuff to make a bomb. America's throwaway commment was that Iran had 3000 in a train , but they werent working very well.
OK , thats not enough for a huge industry , but to my simple mind it shows that from US sources that as they have centrifuges , they are indeed working on a nuclear front [maybe not a bomb , but generating material that could be so used ] . The number of 3000 is from US sources and so could be considerably underestimated.
It makes one ponder ,if the US resorts to such a blatant lie [ posting that Iran has no intentions of going nuclear and stating that their centrifuges aren't too hot { thereby implying that the centrifuges arent used for bombmaking- and as we all knew they had them , so they had to tell that in the same sentence or people may start thinking...} , what actually Iran is/has been doing .
To my simple brain , that means 1 of 3 things - to placate Israel [ ie to lie to them about Irans' intentions] , that the US has been misled by Iran, or finally that they already have the bomb.
if it's either of the first 2 , I would be greatly surprised - they have scientists to hand who should be able to point out the inconsistencies. Hence........
Coming so soon after the Syrian bombing by Israel , one has to wonder whether the two events are linked ?
