Rising Fuel Prices Good for the Government ?

Image
Yeah , OK , the world knows fuel prices have risen a little this year .... and that governments throughout the world have been cajoled into helping out its citizens . What isnt publicised however, is that when the fuel price increases, the government tax take also rises  , as its normally fixed as a % . So the government is profiting from our misery ...... So what should we do ? Well, its in the govs' hands, just cap the take as a temporary measure. It wont be a huge amount , but will make it fairer ......

Russia Helps the Independence Republics - and what's it mean for Ukraine ?

Image
Eduard Basurin, who represents the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, says assault troops are being helped by Russian aircraft and artillery. There you go. Russia says it must be ok to send aircraft and artillery- as it has already stated it has done so.

Little humour amidst tragedy

Oh well, the pic was titled damaged bridge . I thought the description was admirable .....

Moskva and Neptune Missiles

Image
Don't know about you but I was wondering about this ship sinking and how it happened ...  The hard info [below] can be found by search .  Anyhow, it's a lorry launched [air] system developed from a Russian design and designed to knock out ships up to 5000 tonnes . Moskva was 15,000, but got hit twice.  The ship was designed to protect other vessels from incoming missiles . It looks like it might have been targeted to allow for future hits maybe ?  The strategy was to hassle the defences with drones , and then launch whilst distracted , and was rather successful ,, hitting a loaded missile tube [ apparently ] thereby multiplying its destructive power . This and other aspects of Ukraine defence certainly look and feel like intelligent warfare, by far better than in 2014 , when Russia first attacked . One tidbit I recall reading was a few weeks  before the start of the war and stated that Ukraine defences were much better now than in 2014, [they said] primari...

After Covid - Killer Bugs ?

Antibiotic resistance bacteria are apparently now rife with 20% of illness related to said stuff [ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59310099 ] . Health officials are appealing according to that article to only use the stuff if needed . So far as I'm aware, the greatest use of antibiotics is for livestock as it helps them grow better, which is still allowed. Which do we want , healthier humans or cheaper [ and possibly better quality ] meat . Its been a no-brainer up to now. Protein wins !!!

Global warming- a suggestion

A lot of procrastination [ and work] has been involved by nations in tackling the above problem, which is obviously not a great surprise given the cost /complexity and social changes required. Reasons vary: states that produce lots of greenhouse gases don’t want  the loss of revenues associated with cutting that production, resource companies use lobbying power to deny the scope of the problem. Poorer countries state they need finance to help. Newer industrialising nations feel hard done by if asked to cut down their growth for wealth, which might make rich countries being possibly forever out of reach of being overtaken financially.. Some countries are just [possibly justifiably] suspicious of anything rich nations say. Some are …. The list goes on …… What is the world being asked to do ? To keep within a 1.5C warming over pre industrial levels.  What are the consequences of not doing so ? More extreme weather conditions  That is a basic summary, I think .  The prob...
Briefing By Boris Johnson 20/4/21 This was a strange briefing. Normally Boris comes to deliver good news or put a gloss on bad [ at the start of the 1st lockdown was the only 1 I recall as it happens] .  This time , we had a briefing saying people should get vaccinated , and nothing else ; primarily by his GP sidekick . The nothing else bit was emphasised by Boris forgetting about the mandatory graphs and needed to be reminded at the time . In short, a bit of a mess saying nothing . Remembering that briefings were only going to be public for important things , which this categorically did NOT qualify . Finally the length was much shorter than others .  It is barely possible that HMG was trying to get UK vaccination rate above the 85+% ? it's already achieving and someone managed to persuade Boris to forget his normal reticence of staying in the foreground and delivering what to him would be something below his attention span , but does seem very unlikely. If one looks at the n...
